Thanks. I really hate the idea of any water getting in there even with the drain slots. That is such a blatantly big gap too. Bad design or some other purpose??

Just to give a conclusion to this, it was the the rear differential carrier. You have to remove it to open it up and Cadillac does not sell any internal parts (you are forced to by the whole carrier) so did not go any further diagnosing exactly what went wrong in there. Have not opened it up...
