Mine was in good shape - like flawless. But I never liked the look or feel of it (68 X) From the beginning I did the leather wrap and strap - but never really was all that jacked up about that either. When I restored her I did every piece in the car with leather. Seats, pillars, kick panels...
And don’t forget left vs right. This is institutional knowledge that is dying. When I restored mine I switched them all over to right because bring it in somewhere for a rotation or balancing and how many techs are going to know these little idiosyncrasies ….?
I had the same issues w/my 68 X. I bought two “add a leafs” from summit - basically half leafs easy to put on your stack - were only about $40 when I bought them. Raised the car 2” perfect for the anti-rub solution.
Of course you can do as you like and the recommended brands are indeed good quality. However if your springs are good and all you want is a couple inches of additional lift in the rear you could do as I did which was much less expensive gave me exactly what I wanted - which was the couple of...
I wanted the same thing for the GTX. I opted for “add a leaf” from Summit. They’re just half leafs easy to install and very inexpensive it’s been a few but I think I only paid about $38 for them. Can’t remember if that was for one or both. But raised the car the desired 1’- 2’. You might want to...
I considered replacing the air shocks when I restored the car. The vote on FBBO was a resoundingly no. For the reasons you state as well as the stress they put on the shock towers. I needed the lift and went with adding a couple partial leafs. Worked like a charm.
You can also get the add a leaf product from Summit. They’re half leafs and are very cheap In price. IIRC less than $50. Gave me the 2” I needed to clear that tire rub and stiffened the ride. Worked great on my 68 GTX
For simplicity and low cost yet effectiveness - I prefer the method Dennis H used with the “add a leaf” from Summit. I did the exact same thing as he did for about $35 and it raised the back end up about 1” - 2”. Ride quality was unaffected and the process of installation was simple. Did so on...
I have such a stroker as well. Bolted in sub frame connectors during the restoration of the entire car. Didn’t weld them - maybe I should have - and obviously I still can - but the car was dynoed at 555 hp and seems to run solid and stable. May still weld - Ironbuilt is probably right especially...
If you don’t get the ride height you’re looking for you can always buy “add a leaf” from Summit for about $35. They’ll give you another 2” if desired. Easy to attach to your existing springs.
I’m a guy that likes some rake on my GTX as well. I went with new springs and the SummitRacing add a leaf system. Got about what you did. Love the bird and the color. Looks great!
You can get 2” rise in the rear by buying “add a leaf” from Summit Racing for about $35. They’re partial leafs that you add to your existing leaf spring stacks. Simple to install, cheap and will give you the extra lift you want. I put them on my GTX to give me a little extra to clear my rear...
Yeah - you don’t want your nuts falling out.....
Seriously - that gives me another thing to be paranoid about. I’m going to check mine tomorrow. Glad nobody was hurt - that could have had a whole different outcome.
