    Metal Building Issues

I was taught to always insulate a metal roof even in unheated building or there would condensation on the underside of the panels. Metal building manufacturers use a white plastic wrapped fiberglass insulation for their buildings. It has the added advantage of reflecting light brightening the...

    NXCoupe's Shop Build

What the drawing calls a header joist is whatI call a rim joist. There is usually diagonal bracing or solid blocking placed at the mid span of the joists.

    NXCoupe's Shop Build

Can I ask why you are using hurricane clips on the end of the joists rather than a rim joist? Are you planning on installing a rim joist? The rim joist will keep the floor joists from wanting to roll over on their side. A hurricane clip is designed to be used to keep wind from getting under a...

    Work Benches

The three workbenches were made by Lyon. Lyon is still in business making items out of steel. I used to specfy their lockers on jobs I designed. These are old solid benches. The steel is thicker than the newer benches. The lower shelf is a good stiffener for the bench.

    Work Benches

Removed this workbench from my shop. Replaced it with the two 6 foot workbenches bolted together like they were in the barn I got them from. 12 feet of basically empty workbench. Now if I can quit dropping everything on the bench when I walk in the door.

    Work Benches

Reviving an old thread of mine. I have an issue of buying workbenches when they go inexpensively. I bought three more today. I am going to have to get rid of a few.

    OPINIONS ON GARAGE INSULATION???

Vapor barrier placement is based on climate. "Vapor barriers are usually best installed on the side of the wall that experiences the hotter temperature and moister conditions: the inner surface in colder climates and the outer surface in hot, humid climates."

    OPINIONS ON GARAGE INSULATION???

Remember if you use foam it must be covered with drywall or wood as it is considered flammable.

FINALLY!!! NEW GARAGE is framed up!

The difference in blocking and diagonal bracing could have to do with different seismic zones. California is much more active for earthquakes than South Carolina. There are maps in the building code that show different seismic zones for the different area of the nation. California always had...

    New to me Air Compressor

There are no markings on the compressor. It must have been a rebuilt compressor when the previous owner replaced it.

    New to me Air Compressor

I will look for a tag on the compressor to see what type it is. I do not know the cfm it puts out.

    New to me Air Compressor

The best part is how much quieter it is than the my old compressor. The run time to fill a tank twice the size is much less or just seems that way with less noise.

    New to me Air Compressor

I recently purchased a used Sanborn Air Compressor to replace my 30 gallon Husky (Campbell Hausfeld) air compressor. It had the compressor replaced in the last three years and the motor replaced in the last year. The above photo is how it looked when I got it to my shop. It took the help...

Garage roof gutter - Storm Guard

It is required to be installed on the edge of the roof at the eaves and in valleys. I have a friend who builds expensive homes who uses it under all the shingles on a roof. It is a self healing membrane so it seals around the nails. Certain types can not be used under metal roofs since they...

    Interior wall questions

We always painted the inside of our mechanical rooms and storage rooms. The light reflective qualities of the paint was important in any space where people were working. We always used a light color of gloss paint. We specified epoxy paint for chemical resistance and its ability to be cleaned.

The Beginnings of My Shop Build

Just a question. Based on the picture shown of the driveway being above the surrounding ground, how will water flow from one side of the driveway to the other? If the grade on both sides is downhill parallel to the drive it will not be a problem. Be careful about creating dams to trap water.
