Honestly, I'm thinking the same. So, according to my understanding, some guys left Holley, started QFT and then sold the company to Holley about a decade later... and Holley ran with the brand. Now, according to Holley's web site, the Brawlers are made and assembled in the USA.
My gut says...
Just in case anyone is interested, here is what I found when I pulled apart the brand-new Brawler carb I purchased from Summit.
Both of the float bowl gaskets we're split length wise across the top and the vent extension in the primary was cracked. The gaskets for the block we're also not in...
That's a great question. As soon as the workday is done, I'm going to pull the carb and start checking. That'll be the first thing I look for. At the moment, I've done very little to the carb out of the box (still breaking in the engine)... so it'll be good to pull it apart and check.
You think I have a fuel boil issue? I didn't really consider... only because the engine temp is about 185-190, but you think that can still be an issue?
Basic info. to start....
Fuel pressure is 6 lbs
Engine 440, new with about 100 miles
The carb is a new Brawler
The float bowl levels are good...until this issue happens and then the primary bowl is low (bottom of the window)
Once the engine is warm and after driving it for 10+ minutes, the...
Just as a side note, technically speaking, I do not believe you don't need to worry about heatsink as much as you do with a carb... simply because there is very, very little fuel being housed in the sniper. if you're using a return line, then you have cool fuel running constantly at 59 psi...
It looks like it's restricting air flow... It seems to pinch down around the carb... And carbs/throttle bodies are not fans of air having to make a sharp turn in. Dunno... I guess if you need clearance, its a good option.
Excellent point(s). Definitely some more troubleshooting to be done. Having had a bad intake gasket (and head gaskets, etc.) I tend to lean in that direction. Also, it's nothing for me to pop off an intake or head... so I don't think twice if I think there's the potential for an issue... may not...
@LowBikeMike I thought the same thing, but OP said, "It kept doing it even after being warmed up, was running it for maybe 20 mins in total whilst messing about with it and then took it for a test drive and it was still doing it when I came back." That's a long time... but, it's pretty cool and...
Ok... so, this could still end well.. I hope! And it sounds like the tapping was the exhaust, again, a good thing.
yeah... take the radiator cap off and just watch and listen while it's running... and take note of any smoke, little oily bubbles, or any sounds eminating from it.
Here's...
Ok... if the oil wasn't tan (milkshake), that's a positive sign.
Ok... so one potential item is mopar engines have a coolant crossover inside the intake manifold. Essentially, this lets coolant flow from one cylinder head to the other in a separate space within the intake to heat it up. Given...
A couple things do raise a little concern... the smoke and tapping to be specific.
The color (and smell) of the smoke is important. White is typically water/coolant, blue/grey is usually oil, and black is excessive (rich) fuel. When it smokes... does it do that after it's warmed up and keeps...
They typically don't. You can build it out but that can start to get pricey. Most systems are CAN based and connect to the ECU directly completely bypassing the stock wiring. Many will have a separate wire with 3-4 leads that plug into a singular display or cluster. Keep in mind that what you'll...
Holley has a kit that has pretty much everything without what you already have. But you'll need a proper electric fuel pump. Look at the Holley Terminator or depending on your setup, Dominator EFI systems. I've used the Terminator in the past and very much considering moving to again. At the end...
I have a similar setup and was faced with an oddity, which may or may not apply, but worth sharing for giggles. In short, the return fuel line created back pressure in the tank after prime, which would cause the pump to shutoff. I had this weird issue and once I relieved the gas tank pressure...
