Sounds like it could be sucking air instead of fuel. But even with a crack in the pick up you would still be getting fuel I would think. When you blow into the line going to the tank do you hear bubbles from it?
I'm using a three on the tree column on my 67 R/T I just removed the shift lever and cut off the levers that connect to the linkage that went to the transmission. It clears the headers with no problems.
