If the radiator doesn't have enough cooling capacity the car can overheat because the water doesn't stay in the radiator long enough to cool it and the thermostat stays open.
Here's something to consider; if running with a thermostat doesn't achieve the expected result, wouldn't that indicate that either the thermostat is defective or something else is wrong in the cooling system?

I bought the Classic A/C parts to convert my '84 Dodge pickup to modern A/C parts from the firewall forward including the condenser and compressor. Charged with 134 it will freeze me out.
I'm thinking the best scenario for a clutch fan in this particular setup would be to get the clutch no closer than .75" from the radiator and letting the fan be 1.5" away from the radiator.

With the engine running at 2000 rpms or so you should be able to put a small piece of newspaper or tissue in front of the radiator and the fan should pull it to the radiator.
This fan clutch has been hanging on the wall in my garage for a while. I bought it at a flea market years ago. At that time the seller told be it was correct for 64-65 hemi cars. It does measure slightly less than 2 3/4" total height as required for the 62-65 B Bodies. It's stamped "FC-10"...
