Anyone shim their input bearing snap ring with those 3, 5 or 10 thou shims?
I think I'm more concerned about a shim shreding and getting into the bearing.
Hi guys, just recently tearing into this transmission project and trying to learn anything I can about its genealogy, origin, dates, application, really anything at all
thanks for your help
Well what I know
Hurst super shifter
push down for reverse
came with a batch of 4-speed parts I bought
looks relatively unused and was told it was for a failed project that never came to fruition.
only number I can find on it is 8779
2 out of the 3 linkages look correct for an oem shifter, but...
So I was thinking that the correct engine color for my 68 GTX 440 was the turquoise, but then read this:
The engine I have is the OE from a 69 GTX 440 HP and it was painted orange. So what color did they paint the 68 440 HP GTX motor? Was it the orange as the 69 had and as the chart above...
Working on a big block, setting up my 68 RB / 440 no - AC engine accessory setup.
Wondering what is the difference in the application between these two lower pulleys.
Obviously the first will make the alternator and WP turn faster and the second won't.
Whats the thinking between these two...

I read the FSM and no mention of applying sealant to the spline during reassembly.
Anyhow trying...
IS this rear axle gasket needed with green bearings? If so where does one obtain one?

So I have a cone type suregrip. Everything is in really good shape so I am going to assemble it and run it “as is”. Regarding the plates that hold the springs and provide some of the outward force on the cones. There are tabs on one end of each of these plates. They can be assembled either...
couldn't wait any longer so I broke down the 440 to see what I was dealing with after it sat for decades.
2 cylinders have some water damage / rust. I believe this is the reason that its stuck
Any tips on breaking down a stuck engine? good penetrating solvent to soak the cylinders?
Will I...
Well as I feared, suspected, researched how to prevent, and everything else possible including days of soaking in penetrating oil, tapping with a hammer to help loosen and let the oil soak in, both of the long sleeve nuts on the passenger side exhaust manifold snapped off near the nut head...
Slightly puzzled on this manifold and what it is.
When I look at it I come up with casting number 2683408.
After some research that doesn't jive. I've tried some logical variations of that but couldn't decode it.
thanks for your help!
