I have the chance to buy what I've been told is a 18 spline "Hemi" 4-speed.
I'd like to know if anyone knows what #'s to look for on the case that show that it is what they said it is, and for what year?
Is it worth using, or is it more valuable to a guy looking for one for a restoration?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Real easy, count the splines on the input shaft,if there are 18 then it is,if 23 then it isn't.If it has two shifter mounting pads it is 70 and later. The partial vin on rthe pad would match the vin on the car it came out of,could be something someone is looking for, almost every sight has a lost and found section with numbers.

Yep, pretty much as above. 18 splines means you're golden (hemi). But if you must know the details, the hemi box has a first gear ratio of 2.65:1 where as the 23 spline is 2.66:1. Good luck finding the difference in feel and I suspect that's how it came out due to the coarser pitch of the hemi gear teeth.

Is there any number that would show what year it is -
Other than the 2 shifter mounting tabs?

As mentioned, it's the partial VIN on the case (if it's a 68 or newer) and date code. For the early trannys with no VIN pad there is not much more than a casting date on the tailshaft.
