does anybody know what size of freeze plugs a 1964 383 takes in the head. i had one blow behind the exhaust manifold and the parts store has to know what size they are. can anybody help me with this thanks guys

MoPar sell's them in packs or single.
Can you take that one out and down to the store?

well i dont wanna take one out and because the rest are still good. if somebody had one laying around where they could take a caliper and measure it for me i sure would appreciate it. 69 runner they do say doorman but if the one you are looking at is .024 thousandths thats too small. hell thats not even a 1/4 inch. i appreciate your help guys

I'm guessing if you give the parts store (a real one that is) that whole number 555-024 they will give you the right thing

hey 69 runner. i just went to the parts store and got a freeze plug that has doorman 555 024 and one that says doorman 555 025. does your 383 have doorman 555 024 plugs in it 69 runner

If your head doesn't have a freeze plug (not actually the correct name, but it's what everyone calls them) in the end of the head, then it will have maybe a 516, 915, or some such. If it has the plug and has two "vertical bars" cast in the head near that plug, then they have been changed and would be a 452.

If the motor is all 64, the heads won't have the plug in the end and will be a closed chamber head.

thank you very much 69 runner. i know they arent called freeze plugs. there actually called core plugs so they can get the sand outta the block when they cast it. thank alot again 69 runner

hey 69 runner. could you give me a teaching lesson and tell me the difference in these heads. i dont understand closed chamber heads and etc. i just thought that different heads had different size of valves and thats about it. i appreciate it

hey 69 runner im gonna take pics of my motor tonight and post here and maybe you could tell me what kind of heads and stuff it has. where is the casting numbers located on the heads and stuff. i really appreciate it

The casting number is in two places on each head. One is on the bottom side under the intake runners. The other is on top of an intake runner. I'll try to take some pics for ya and post them showing the location of the numbers and the differences in the chambers. There are good and bad things about both chamber designs such as a closed head is better for quench, but suffers a bit from valve shrouding.

I'm sure others will jump i on this. There's a bunch of pretty smart peeps on here:grin:

hey 69 runner, i got my core plug in and yes it was 555- 024 or whatever that was. i had to put one in on my block about 2 years ago when i first got the car. as i start looking someone else put one in on the other side sometime years ago. the same one i put in a couple of years ago. the middle one. well whoever did it sure did knock it in quite a ways and i was wondering if you can knock them in to far. i mean i know you can knock em in straight in the block water jacket but is there any thing bad that can happen if there to far in. i mean like if it would happen to go concave bad could it pop into the block or are they made to pop out. there is probably other people wondering this too. thanks alot 69 runner

I'm thinking that it probably won't pop "in", but you can drive them in to far. Most of the plugs used are metal and will eventually rot. So if one got inside the motor it would eventually rot. Course I suppose that means there's always a possibility pieces could get in to the water pump and/or the thermostat.

hey 69 runner. i dont mean to come off as a know it all but i think the freeze plug if one got knocked in the block i think it would end up at the hole at the very end of the block where the water pump housing bolts. that hole right there where it begins the journey in the water pump housing. and i know that hole isnt large enough for the plug to go through. thats where i believe she would plug up.

Freeze Plug / Core Plug

To bring back this older thread: I have a leak at the same freeze plug / core plug - the one on the driver's side head inside the area covered by the exhaust manifold or header flange. It leaks when the car is sitting- just a little. When the engine is running the water evaporates on the block long before it ever drips out of the car. In my case this is on a 70 Roadrunner with a stock 383.

1. Did we establish for a fact what size plug this is?

2. How do I change it? Do I punch a hole in it, pull it out and pound in a new one? Can this be done in the car if the header is out of the way?

3. For a drip this small is there some "stop leak" additive I can put in the coolant? I'm not usually a fan of these, but we're talking a teaspoon of coolant leaking out in a week...

Thanks

G
