Are there. Any experts in the 1965 cable shifted 727 trans? My park cable got melted so I ordered a new on to replace it. I was unable to release the retaining spring through the access hole, so I removed the cover and then released it. It’s a nightmare to get the spring retainer back in and put the cover back on but I did it. But the problem I have is reinstalling the cable like the manual says. Put it in neutral, (its a console shift), insert cable into cover and into spring retainer and it clicks. Pull back on cable end and tighten cable lock bolt. Inside the car, connect the cable. Done right? I shift it from neutral to park and it locks and you can’t shift out of park. What am I missing?

I agree these are a brute to install from under the car. My guess is that the piece that has the roll pin in it has jumped out of place from the pictured actuator with the slot in it. The roll pin is now ahead of the actuator, and will not release Park when the cable is pulled.

Assuming you've connected the spring correctly. You dont pull the cable out of the housing until it stops. Just let it float. The portion of the cable that slides into the park housing should stickout about 1/8".
