Like many people on here I have a bad habit of looking at Mopars for sale that I have no business looking at. I often look at 66 Coronets since I had one way back in the day and wouldn't mind finding another. I have noticed that a lot of sellers (not on this site) don't mention which engine is in the car (usually with no pictures either). That got me to thinking what the front fender badges might disclose. Note: I edited this to change the word "tags" to "badges" as I realized it could be confusing since there are tags under the hood.

If I recall correctly, my 66 500 had "383 four barrel" badges, the meaning is obvious
I have seen "Hemi" which is also obvious
I have also seen just "V8" which I assume could be 318 poly, or 361. Any other possibilities?
and I have seen no badge at all. Are no badge cars slant sixes?

I think,

V8 is 273, 318 poly, 361 2bbl

PS, I dont think 383 2 bbl was an option. All 4 bbl engines, I think

And Yes I would assume slant six had no engine callouts on the fenders

I have never seen a factory 66 273 at least here. I agree on the other stuff.

That is correct.

VIN C, 225- no emblem
VIN D, E, F, 273, 318, 361- V-8 emblem.
VIN G, 383-4 (only a four barrel available in 66)- 383 FOUR BARREL emblem
VIN H, 426- 426 HEMI emblem.

Back in the late 80's a friend had a factory black 273 three speed on the tree Coronet 440. Straight as an arrow body.

What and where would the code be on the fender tag for each engine size? Since the VIN is in the door jamb

It's under the letters-

AB41 = 318
AB51 = 361
AB62 = 383-4bbl
AB73 = 426 Hemi

That's from a Charger site, there were no 225 or 273 AB codes on Chargers.

Shout out to @YY1 for always taking time to expand our horizons on the '66 Coronet. My next car to get running is this 383-4 barrel car

About 30 years ago a fellow I believed lived in North or South Dakota. Supposedly special ordered a slant six possibly 3 on the tree 66 Charger.
Reason being he didn’t want his teenage children driving too fast.

Jeremiah is the reason I stay awake at night thinking if I sell the GTX, and the old ski boat, and recycle all my beer cans, etc. I could buy that 4 speed 66 or the green with white interior car. I damn near sold a kidney to buy the 1st gen Charger he was selling a while back.

Give me a call and we can work something out. I'm easy to deal with. This GTX you speak of...where is the ad lol

I asked the original question to try to see what could be learned about the engine based on only what you could see from outside the car. What about exhaust pipes? Assuming the exhaust is stock, what can be learned from single vs. dual exhausts? Mostly focused on 66 Coronets.

Factory dual exhaust cars (in 66 383, 426) but I'll just talk about 383 since I'm not a Hemi guy, had the pas side exhaust hanger brackets spot welded to the floor, but the driver's side bolted. That makes it kind of hard to tell if the driver's side was added later.
They did use the exact same brackets, though.

Generally, on a Mopar, single exhaust on the pass side = V8 2 barrel, on the driver's side = six cyl.

That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. Didn't know about the mismatched hanger mounting and likely would've assumed someone tampered with them. I was thinking the six would always be on the driver's side but wasn't sure about one pipe v8's.
