1968 charger 6 banger how rare?

I have a 68 charger dealership sales brochure and it has the 318 as standard. Doesnt say 1 word about the slant 6. 318, 383, 440 and the hemi. That's it. Anyone ever see a 340 in a charger?

2 different 383's at that. 2bbl and 4bbl

I was wondering about 340's in Chargers too. Never seen a Slant 6 Charger, seen a Slant 6 70 Challenger though.

340 was never offered in any Charger from the factory

Because they liked the body style but could not afford the bigger engines (or where buying it for the wife/kid to drive I know this cause my mom had a fit when my first car had a V8 when all my brothers had 6 cylinder first cars). Every option above a 318 was a couple of hundred to the price tag. Also back then the attitude was "what ever the customer wants" and if they wanted a /6 the factory would do it. Don't forget that the Camaro and Mustang were both 6 cylinder based cars and sold well.

But the Mustangs & Camaros were also 500#-750#'s minimum lighter too... if it wasn't the std. engine "the 318ci" you paid extra for it !!, not to many people opted for extra cost related to the Slant 6, unless it was the std. engine in mostly smaller cars like A-bodies or 1/2 ton Pick-Ups/Vans for it's torque, when the 318ci was a "great base engine", with decent mileage & power @ no extra cost....

I never even knew they built slant 6 68 Charger

Is it rare, as people have pointed out. Yep it is. Is it desirable? Not really as people have pointed out. Is it a complete running and driving car that's in good shape? Then buy it and use it as a daily driver. If it doesn't run then I'd say you have a nice candidate for a resto-mod. Don't go the R/T 440, 440-6 or 426 Hemi route. But go the new modern Gen 3 hemi route. 5.7, 6.1, 6.4, or 426 even 440. Toss in an overdrive transmission and you've got a great looking car that will roast the tires all day long and get you 20 or so mpgs while doing it.

food for thought. :)

I have never seen it. Heard tales of 'em. Probably tall tales. Who knows. Way back when you could get away with ordering wacky stuff. I read a magazine article on a 66 coronet 4 door that someone ordered with a hemi.

/6 was a late year addition to the 68 Charger. Production was fairly low but they are out there. There were probably more than 3 three on the tree cars built but I don't think the exact number is known.

re: 340 in a Charger...68-70; no 340's. What about the 72-73 Charger Rallyes? Pretty sure you could get a 340 in them and they are considered Chargers. The 71 Super Bees, (quasi Chargers) could have a 340.

The 1968 charger I have has the correct serial number for 6 cylinder and 3speed. It has the hole in fire wall where the clutch was. I just purchased the car this year and original colour was green. The car is now black. And is a full time drag race car. Kind of interesting to here how rare the car really is. To bad it wasn't original.

I just purchased the car this year vin number xp29c8b434845. The C in the vin number stands for a special order 6 cylinder. I've also been told that G is a 383 2 barrel and has been mistaken for a C. Ill double check the number again and post a picture.

need pic of fender tag as well to confirm

so this original 6cyl car with 3spd manual trans does not have this engine trans combo anymore?

'71 Charger Super Bee the 340 was available...there were 320 made, '72 Charger Rallye 340, 1,364 made, '73 Charger Rallye 340, 2,811 made.QUOTE=A383Wing;909924206]340 was never offered in any Charger from the factory[/QUOTE]

They all have the oval hole where the clutch rod comes through. Either a boot or plug would be installed depending on the application. But does it have the slender firewall bracket with the two studs (facing into the car) to support the clutch pedal brackets and the bracket on the frame rail where the Z-bar studs mounts to?

I pretty much am going this exact route now. Started out with a 67 Coronet Deluxe 2 dr post, 273 with 3 speed on the tree car. Not many survived making it rare but not really desirable either. So i decided to do what I wanted and put in a 5.7 hemi, 5 speed on the floor and should be a blast to drive (soon I hope :D)

No it's a drag car. With a 440 727 and dana 60.
