Hey guys, Ive been disassembling my front suspension parts to get ready to start cleaning them for plating, coating, etc. Ive been doing a bunch of research on the lower control arm finish and have seen both the cosmoline dipped and black finish on the lowers. Ive read that 1968 and earlier lower control arms were black. I believe that my lowers are original to the car due to the absence of any date code stampings on the rivets. I see no evidence of cosmoline at all, but the car was painted in the past and has overspray and rust on the arms so its hard to tell. Can anyone tell me what the correct color would be on a '68 B body? Thanks!

Ok, I partially cleaned one area of one of the control arms. This area had undercoating on it, but it was thin in spots, and I could see clean metal in the thin spots. This has me more confused because there is no evidence of cosmoline, but it looks like a dip line. However, the dip line is not in the traditional spot. It is nice smooth metal on one side and scaley on the other. The face of the control arm doesn't show any sign of a dip line though. It looks like they were unpainted but the line has me wondering. Any thoughts?

Typical response to a very real inquiry for help and/or opinion to an issue. The above response was not funny or even mildly humerous, in my opinion. Some people have a burning desire to say anything....relative to the subject or in this case nothing. If one does not know the answer to the question posed, perhaps the best thing to do listen to those that do know.

Its a flipping joke RC made grow up......and as always it was funny....

To the OP...Was that line on both or just one....Looks like to me it just got half dipped.....Which has happened....Would I recreate that, NO....Do whats correct which is 68 up ALL were dipped...The painted control arms are a "myth" IMHO I have yet to see a survivor with one....A non survivor who knows what was done in 40 plus years...

Also, 68 control arms did get date stampings...not all but some did....

It's all good, RC is a ball buster...it's all in good fun.

Justin, I pulled the rubber bump stops off and see some remnants of the cosmoline. I also see some in the sleeve where the strut rod goes. Those are the only spots where there is any traces of cosmoline. The tank must have been close to empty that day, but I'll be doing a normal dip when I redo them...

It is an odd find...and that could have been the case the tank was about empty or just laziness...

                    How is the meltdown going?

Your initial response above provided zero to the OP's response but you have to point out your little butt hurt comment above not once but twice now.....Over RC's post that offends NO ONE....Not even the OP whom created this thread and stated such but here you are still continuing your nonsense...

So when you say another didn't provide anything Germain to the subject...Well guess what your providing? The exact friggin same...

I provided information to the OP's point. Can you? If not then why post? Or does everyone else have to stay on subject but you? LOL

Did they coat these different for different parts of the country? I have not seen one coated yet.

As far as I know, they were all coated regardless of assembly plant. I don't think that the coating was very durable in a harsh environment like salt and snow, so they lost the color rather quickly...

68 and up has been well documented that ALL got Cosmoline......It was cheaper than paint and lasted the same time as paint would have with the road abuse...

I have tons of pictures of all types of original examples of parts and markings from survivors and NOS parts.....

Here are two examples of the original cosmoline on a 68-70 b body LCA...

                            Still BS? LOL!
