1968 Charger remote mirror bezel installation....

What Am I doing wrong?

I have a '68 Charger and I'm trying to attach the chrome bezel ring to the remote mirror cable joystick. The problem is that I can't get the bezel to catch the threads of the joystick. The upper door pad cutout hole for the joystick takes up too much thickness for the bezel to catch the threads. I did test the bezel to the the joystick w/o the pad and it does thread up to it. The threads only stick out 5/16" of an inch. And I do have the "C" clip to secure the joystick to the door frame. To me it appears that the threads need to be longer. I did research for '68 Charger remote mirrors and mine matches what's online.

I had the same problem with the bezel for my ignition switch in my 68 Coronet. No matter how hard I pushed from behind the dash, there weren't enough threads exposed to tighten. Maybe remove some of the material from inside the hole??...

I push the remote mirror knob through the door and upper pad and the threads aren't long enough the get the retainer on. Even if I took the black push nut off I wouldn't have enough threads and the cable holders hit the back side of the panel when you try to move the mirror. So, the push nut...
