Hey All -

Got the boy's car all blown apart for paint, decided to add factory hood pins.

Would anybody have the dimensions of the holes I need to drill in the hood? I really don't want to reassemble the front clip just to get the correct location before I prime/paint/etc.

Thanks in advance!

Look on the underside of the hood bracing.

There should already be holes stamped there.

There is also likely a hole in the core support that lines up with them...for the actual pin

I've put the hood pins in, put a drop of grease or white glue on top of it then gently lowered the hood to get the pin location. Then use a Greenlee punch to get the hole. Have done this on finished cars, just touch up the exposed edge when done.

Well, that's the problem - the pins attach to the fender bracing, not the core support.

I may just have to do that instead

1971-2 are the easiest to locate, holes are already there. All you have to do is drill the sheetmetal once centered in underside holes.

Back in the day, when the car was just transportation, two small rust holes appeared in my hood. Rather than having the problem fixed, I cheaply decided to put pins through those holes, since they happened to have a place on the support to mount them. I got a nice hood from my parts car with no holes to fill. I was going to fill in the holes on the support, but decided to use them for grounding.

Be advised that "factory tolerances" can stack up. I usually install the pins and use them to locate the hood holes. At times the pins are not exactly in the center of the holes in the subframe and you end up with the pins rubbing on the hood metal or the pin bezels. Yup, have a degree from the school of hard knocks.

...but there are already stamped holes in the hood bracing, which was my point.

...and also factory holes for the pins...which was my other point.

I do see many, many cars where the pin installer failed to notices that it's already laid out for you.
