Anybody know a good reason why the inner and outer fenders can't be fabricated from fiberglass, carbon fiber, or kevlar/carbon fiber? Anything that attaches to them that absolutely needs to be attached to metal?

Apparently fiberglass fenders were made at some point, as you see them show up occasionally on ebay.

All the ones I've seen are in the $600 each range (accounting for shipping), making them just as expensive and just as difficult to find as clean OEM units, plus the risk of poor fit, which always comes with fiberglass.

I was thinking about vacuum infusing them myself out of kevlar and carbon, not the car I am restoring now but a possible future project and making the molds from the car I have now.

Not seeing anything that would prevent it from working, yet, besides whatever mistakes I make molding and fabricating them.

I think you may find a strong market for those if they are an affordable, quality product.

I personally know about 1/2 a dozen potential customers.

At one time AMD was considering making these, since they are already making both 71 and 72 full and partial quarters.

Unfortunately it appears they have either shelved or cancelled the project.

"Affordable" might be a problem for the more exotic, and stronger, materials. At least *appearing* affordable might be the problem. Regular fiberglass should be a lot cheaper than $600 per outer fender for sure, but I am not so sure that kevlar/carbon would come in much under that.

I do have a much smaller part to work on that might prove interesting, but keeping that one quiet until I actually make one for my car. Hopefully the easier one will be popular enough to pay for the work I want to do on my engine. At any rate, if I convince myself that I can make good small parts in reality I can make the bigger stuff on demand too.
