The 1974 Charger SE could be bought with the 440 HP engine, rated at 275 HP. Interestingly, I have that engine, and it is also stamped HP, and they were all forged crank engines, drilled for a stick, and around 208 made, I believe that year. In addition, 79 1974 Roadrunner/GTX models were made with the 440 HP as well.

IIRC on 72 and up 400 the only difference between the 2 and 4 barrel versions was the intake and carb.
They all had the same compression and cam.

If you ordered the 4 barrel, you did also get dual exhaust, and on certain models (Charger Rallye and Roadrunner), you got a "400 Magnum" pie pan and hood emblems (Charger), and could get optional "machine gun" tips.

Think you better go back and do some more research. Cams, valve springs and bearing materials where different in 72

It is hp for high preformance.

My 72 Satellite Sebring Plus was ordered the same way. In 72 the horse power rating was 255.
My first SSP was a 4 speed so it also had a steel crank that the autos don't.

That is interesting about the steel crank on the 400 hp 4 speed cars. I recently bought a 73 SSP with that configuration. Pretty rare I think and did not know it had a steel crank. Very interesting. For a large heavy car it runs pretty good.

There were maybe 137? 1974 Charger 440 HP's as well, and they were steel cranks as well.

I think the cam change was in 74.

I can shed SOME light on 74 Charger SE's with 440's - having my car decoded by Galen Govier.
There were 36,399 Charger SE's built in 1974.
30,953 were shipped in the US.
Of those, only 836 came with 440's.
My $0.02.
