I'm currently orientating on the do's and the don't and the pro's and the con's on installing a 3 gen Hemi in my 70's Plymouth Satellite. I bought it with a 440 and a 727.

As an overseas mopar owner purchasing a 3 gen Hemi is expensive. The 5.7 isn't rare but the 6.1 and 6.4 is and that's actually the engine I prefer.

Which engine (years) should be avoided?

A few questions that pop in my mind are:

Can I use a A518 46RH with lockup behind the 3 gen Hemi without having to cut the bellhousing?

I would like to use the original K-member and suspension.

What other parts do I need?

I've read Schumacher makes the motor mounts. So that wouldn't be a problem.
Can I use the original headers with a manual steering car? I've made a custom EPS under the dash, so there is room for headers, but would it be enough.
Which wiring and ECU can I buy these days? Where can I find it?
I would like the injection that comes with the 3 gen Hemi. Don't want to use a carburator.

I would like to get some more information on the swap from people who have experienced it before I sell my 440 and 727.

Any help or info would be nice. Thx!

You should post this in the New Hemi forum. Also start by digging through that forum and most answers will be there. There are a lot of things that have to be done to do this. But it is very doable. Good luck.

Thx! Haven't seen that one. Could the moderator move this topic?

All the blocks are good.there really isn't a bad year with the 6.1 or 6.4. The early 5.7 uses a larger combustion chamber cylinder head and has less compression. Also the early 5.7 and 6.1 are not VVT engines. If you are using a factory computer and doing a stock engine swap. The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) isn't a big deal. It only gets a little complicated when building a high horse power engine. But not really that complicated. You can turn a 5.7 into a 6.4 with a stroker kit and CNC ported heads but by the time you do all of this you could just by a 6.4 crate engine.
The 518 will bolt up to the Gen 3 Hemi. You will need to change the flex plate. You will also need a way to lock up the torque converter and shift the transmission into overdrive. PATC sells a kit to do this. Also these engines are drive by wire so if you are going to use a 46rh you might want to change the throttle body to drive by cable. That way you can attach the aftermarket overdrive system.
The computer is pretty expensive.Hotwire make a stand alone that is the most affordable but it is a 5.7 truck computer reflashed. Not sure about all the sensors. Also there are two different reluctor wheels a 32 and a 58.Most systems are base on the 36.(6.1 and early 5.7)
Holley and fast make a stand alone system that requires tuning. All of them will require some tuning but the factory computers will be less.
Modern Muscle sells stand alone factory computers for all the engines. They also sell crate engines.

One size fits all, gen-III aftermarket stuff, generally requires mods for the 6.4

Thx, guys!

I already have a way to switch on the OD and LU using a vacuum and pressure switch, so that's solved...

I prefer a 6.1L and am already looking at salvage cars at copart.com. Does anybody other ways to buy a used engine?

I have some lessons learned with GIII in 1970 B-Body. But I put new K frame and coil overs in, so a bit more than an engine/trans swap. Sounds like the "New Hemi forum" is the better place to research this.
