So I got a 1974 charger se 318, 904, 8 1/4. I know I need the conversion motor mounts to get 440 sitting on k member, but does anyone know if the crossmember is same between big blocks and small blocks? I also know I would need to shorten driveshaft. Is there anything else needed to swap 318/904 to 440/727? Has any one here done this with same car and setup?

I already know basically everything in that right up just no one will say if the BB and sb transmission crossmember is the same.

I have done the swap before in a 74 Plymouth Satellite. I did not change the trans cross member or trans mount. Bottom radiator outlets are different but you can swap in a different water pump housing on the 440 to accommodate if you don't change radiators. Read the directions on the engine swap mounts. There is some cutting/grinding needed. Driveshaft yokes are different between 904 and 727 as well. I can't recall if trans cooling lines are different, but they are close enough between the two.
I probably forgot some things but that is the meat of your answer.

Thanks a lot badvert65 I wanted to hear from someone with real experience with this and all the little things u run into.

Don't forget the toughest part of the swap! You'll have to change your screen name to Charger440 too. :headbang:

I've noticed the parts shops show different cooling lines for each, with different pictures too IIRC. Not definitive, but worth checking into further.

A lot of what you're going to need depends on how complete your engine is as far as ignition and accessories go. You're also going to need the following big block parts:

Power Steering Pump Brackets
Distributor
Fuel Pump
Plug wires
Alternator and Brackets
Exhaust Manifolds/Headers
Water Pump

I wouldn't suggest longtube headers as I learned when I was having a 440 put in my 74 Road Runner. Get the Hedman short headers and they'll work better.

I have an 8 1/4 in my car now but will be putting an 8 3/4 in.

You'll also need to upgrade the torsion bars to big block ones, get a new speedo cable as the fittings on the 904 and 727 are different, and upgrade to a three-core radiator.

And before you blow a lot of money on motor mounts on ebay, NAPA still sells them for about $16 a side.

If I was gonna stay small block I would do the 360 to 408 stroker
