is it normal for the top alternator bracket bolt to almost touch the belt?

Here's mine

I know mines pretty close on my 68 Roadrunner.

As long as it doesn’t hit bolt and shred the belt

If you use a shorter belt, the alternator would hang lower, the belts top horizontal section would be lower then that bolt head. Also then again two vehicles traveling at 95 miles per hour towards each other passing each other with only 4'' between them will still miss each other, but still scary.
How about the bolt at the alt. bracket and water pump housing? Close to your belt also? Here's mine.

What size do u recommend? Also will a shorter belt increase alternator speed?

You can take your belt to any auto parts store, have them measure it. Try an inch shorter, see what it looks like. Belt length has nothing to do with pulley speed, only changing the drive or driven pulley diameter will change the speed.

All better. Shorter belt from NAPA did the job. Thanks for the help.

I see it's a cog belt, that's good. Maybe its just me, but save your tested belt and throw it in the trunk, it's nice to have two of some things with the quality of todays parts.
Good idea but I have way too many stuff in my truck already car show stuff and a small tool box etc.... hahahaha
