My dad is wanting to stroke a 383 for his 66 Sport Fury. I'm looking for recommendations and info on where to buy and what kits would work best. If anyone has done this we would appreciate any information thanks.

440 source will be 488-496 ci. you could turn a 440 steel to make a 438. 440 source kit is about 2200.00 or so i think.

Me and a buddy of mine are doing exactly the same thing - putting a stroked 383 into a '66 Fury. He chose to go with a 438" kit from 440 Source with their Stealth heads. Pretty basic combo, just under 10:1 compression, Hughes hydraulic cam, dual plane intake. Everything has gone together easy, just like a stock build, no grinding or fitment issues. 440 Source parts are good for the money.

This is going to be a zero-maintenance street cruiser with a lot of highway driving. With a shelf hydraulic cam and OOTB heads the idea was that he would never use the full potential of the 60 extra cubic inches of a 496", probably never see more than 5,000 rpm. There will more torque on tap than he will ever need with a 438". Knowing the way this guy drives, he does not need to break the tires loose every time he gooses the throttle.

That build sounds like what he is wanting. He isn't wanting to go wild with it. He will be swapping out the 440 he built basically stock specs and the 4 speed for the 383 hooked up to a Hemi automatic. He's 72 and says he is getting to old to change gears but works on his cars and everyone else's every day tho lol.

I have a .030 over 383 block with an Eagle 3.9 inch stroke crank, Eagle 6.760 H beam rods with J&E pistons making about 449 ci in my 65 Belvedere. Couldn’t be happier.

If it was my personal build, I would have gone in a slightly different direction - 400 block, better heads, roller cam etc. but my friend does not have a lot of knowledge/experience so we kept it simple. I am teaching him how to do all this stuff and letting him use my shop but in the end once it's in the car he's on his own so the "zero-maintenance" idea was a top priority. He's not going to be racing it so no swapping intakes or cams, no valve lash, probably won't even touch the carb or timing once it's set. He just wants to turn the key and head down the road.

The other aspect of the 438" vs. a 496" is the rod angle. If you drove it long enough you might see some thrust side wear but that's probably not something to be concerned with unless you're really racking up the mileage.

If he had a 400 block that's probably what he would do. Thanks for the info he drives this car almost daily as weather permits. It's great of you letting your friend use your shop and teaching him hard to find good friends like that these days.

we built a 438 for a 73 duster drag car, 6.49 all day long. diff than you want to do but a very surprising power plant for small cube eng.

I’ve got to say. I’m very happy with the 440 source package for the 451 in the car. I did have the heads gone over per the many comments, reviews I had read. No issues were found. The Dyno and performance results are and were very satisfying. The chassis dyno was 412 horse and 456 torque. Unfortunately traction is an issue as far as the track. The best I’ve run, 13.3 at 109, starting out like a stop sign. That’s on me too though, my reaction isn’t the greatest. My compression is at about 10.5, I had to back the timing down when I moved here 4 years ago. It’s been 8 years now and no issues except the rear main.

If he has a good 440 then why not put some good heads and a well chosen cam it the short block he's got? Displacement would be about the same?

He's already built 3 440 in past 5yrs none of which are to wild. He's always talked about stroking a 383. I tell him that he has to much time on his hands lol.
