383 Windage tray

i was wonder if a 1971 383 has a Windage tray from factory? There’s nothing listed in the 71 parts catalog or service manual. There reason I ask is because I had my oil pan gasket replaced last year and is now leaking again. I know if it has a Windage tray two oil pan gaskets are needed. I don’t know if the garage installed two gaskets if it does have a Windage tray and also they put rtv sealer on the gasket. Is that normal?

A little RTV is perfectly normal, especially upfront where the timing cover comes down and meets the oil pan gasket. Some people put it on like they’re icing a cake but really all you need is a very thin smear.

Weather a 383 came with the windage tray or not really isn’t the question. The question is does your 383 have a windage tray.

Best way to tell is to get under the car clean off a nice spot and look real close. The windage tray is a piece of sheet metal and you’ll see it clear as a Bell

Some did and some didn’t? Also I’m not sure if it’s the oil pan gasket or rear main both have replaced. I’m getting oil around the outside diameter of the trans dust shield. When I look up into flywheel with cover off everything looks dry in there.

I really don’t know which ones came with and which ones didn’t. I can’t answer that question. But even if your engine came with one doesn’t mean there’s on one now, these 40+ years later.

First I’d verify it’s engine oil and not trans fluid - if an auto.

Then I’d just say that you need to clean it up real good, then stuff a sock in one breather And blow some compressed air in the PCV hole on a valve cover. And you should see real quick where the oil is coming out

My dads the original owner of the car. He never had the engine apart.

I’m getting oil around the outside diameter of the trans dust shield. When I look up into flywheel with cover off everything looks dry in there.

I had the same thing going on, with my 440, also sporting a windage tray. Will depend on the shape of the gaskets, pan itself, and so on. Fix for mine...re-tightened the pan bolts.

Windage tray on a 383? The 383 HP motors I've done used 'em...one of the parts that made it an HP.
