4 speed, chained...

If he ran big slicks It might have kept him from continually ripping trans mounts or when he did stopped him from breaking u-joints.Pretty good redneck engineering.
A buddy and I ran a Super Street road runner with a 4 speed in the early 80's and never had that problem. Never had to chain the trans down. We did run a solid left side mount tho. The car ran 10.70's and launched at 6k rpm depending on track conditions.
 
The rear quarter lip is rolled flat to clearance a wide tire at some point. Luckily it's a pretty solid body to start. Compression is a little low @ 110-120psi on the 383 (even with 516's) but no smoke. It's got a good lope, but everything internal is an unknown so itchin to open it up. See lots of money needed for electrical/mechanical.

Lot of difference between early 60s and early 80s. Would imagine yall ran frame connectors too. That would keep a lot of things from dancing around.
