I am getting ready to change the cam in my 440 and want to know if I have to drop the front of the oil pan. or, can I get the timing cover off without disrupting the oil pan gasket seal? All advise appreciated.

The timing cover comes off without disturbing the pan gasket...so long as the front portion of the gasket doesn't stick to the cover but that can be fixed without removing the pan if it does stick.....

Front end gasket sets for the big blocks used to come with the front piece of the oil pan gasket, maybe still do. You would trim off what is visible and put the new part in it's place. These days I would just use some sealer and bolt it up. The stuff I like is called The Right Stuff and it works great. I used it on my 455 Olds oil pan in stead of the rubber end seals. Not one leak.
