If your marine engine was designed for reverse rotation (like many of them were) then the rear seal area with the diagonal serrations or knurling are machined in the opposite direction...meaning you'll end up pumping oil out instead of keeping it in.
I think this is the direction the knurling should be on the automotive crank.
Are you using a rope seal? The only 'cure' I've heard of is to polish off the knurling and use a nice soft rubber seal https://monicattichrysler.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=321 . But if you have to pull out the crank, you may as well see if you can sell it to a marine shop (I think it's been awhile since you could get them from Chrysler and there's still some demand) and get a proper one.
