440 intake install

Hi everyone
I have a crazy question I never thought I would have to ask. I purchased a original intake to put on my 1970 GTX. While removing the old intake I noticed that the old intake did not have a gasket between it and the heads? :confused:It had the steel valley pan and silcone around each port? The car seemed to run okay this way. Do I install the new steel intake the same way or use a new valley pan and the proper Felpro 4 piece gasket kit that goes on each side of the pan? Also does anyone the part number or where to get the choke cup gasket that goes between the cup and the manifold? Thanks in advance Rich
 
4 piece gasket set?

No young padawan. All you need (unless the heads or intake has been cut) is the steel shim valley pan. These can be reused depending on what condition they're in.

If you're using the 70 holley cast intake that takes a cup where the choke goes, I'd just use the hi-temp sylicone.
 
I like a little insurance on the sealing. I,d be afraid i,d suck some silicone into the intake port or worse yet have a leak and get water in a cylinder from rain or bad weather
 
I don't use silicone anywhere except at the corners were the front and rear of the heads meet the deck. I use Permatex Aircraft (the stuff in the jug) and have had no problems in 33+ years of building big blocks. I've even reused the valley pans before....once at the track. I pulled and replaced the intake in about 15 minutes using the same pan. No issues
 
Thanks for your responses. I am going to go with senior:tongueflap: members sugestions ( only kidding experence is knowledge) and just use the steel pan with silicone on the corners and across the block.The intake I bought is casting number 2951736 which I read should be the right intake for a 1970 GTX 440???? Is it?? I just spent alot( too much) for the factory carb 4737 ( and resto on it- Harms Inc. #1 job:yes: thanks Scott)and would hate to think it was wrong. It does have the cup and required gasket under the choke. Thanks Rich

I agree, valley pan with a THIN layer of sealer. Silicone or Right stuff in the corners.
 
All the gasket is good for is to slip and cause an air leak. 47 years of big mopar with every intake on the planet and never had a problem.
 
You can usually get away with just the tin pan with iron to iron mating... but when you go to aluminum to iron or aluminum to aluminum you should use the 4 piece gasket set (four intake gaskets... two on each side of the tin pan)
