440 timing

Are you asking about base timing, or full mechanical advance?

Your timing will vary from anyone else's, even with the same combination. You just need to experiment around and see what's best.

A good start would be: 12-15 initial with vac advance disconnected and hose plugged. Total without vac advance around where you have it at 34. Vac advance should add about 8 deg and be hooked up to the ported vacuum port.

Rusty is right on. While 34-36deg total advance is a good place to start with just about any big block, there are so many other variables like cam lift, duration and overlap, compression ratio, which distributor etc. etc.... that it's impossible to make a blanket statement about what timing will be the best for your combination. Even factory specs for stock engines aren't always ideal for the best performance. Even fuel quality can affect timing. Like Meep, I'm running 12 initial and about 34 total. That's probably a good place to start. You will just have to experiment with different timing setting to suit your setup. Just don't go much more than 36 total to avoid detonation and you will be OK.
