I used to set my small block bracket racer with 35 degrees total timing (with vacuum advance disconnected). Now I wonder where to set the timing when first starting a re-build which would be a 2,000 - 3,000 rpm fast idle? And would that be set with or without distributor vacuum advance hose connected? Thank you.

Disconnect hose, set at 35 once youre up to rpm, break in motor

No vacuum 28 to 30 at 2500 use race gas 50/50with 94 if point distributor always better for breakin points should just be ready to open set balancer at 6 degrees before top dead center. Drill a small hole behind plug one in cap with green irridecenct paint paint rotor top then with no gas timing light connected face timing light at hole behind number one and crank it then if all good proceed to add fuel and start on first crank

I prime the oil system.
Leave the plugs out and time it using the starter.
I would start at 15 degrees BTDC and shoot for 40 when running. There's no load.

The more you can put in it the better. Keeps the exhaust cooler, especially freshly coated headers. It's not under load so it won't detonate. Not necesary to use race gas if it's high compression either. Again no load on it.
