Hi can some one tell me on a 1969 gtx. Built date of oct-16-1968 what would be the the built date on the motor and would it have the vin on the side rail. THANKS MIKE

Yes your Vin# should be there. it should at least start with 9Bxxxxxx same as your dash vin. Some had all 13, some didn't. The engine date was Important on a 67' and early 68', but once VINX came into application, that is crucial. And
The cast date is not Important.

Engine assembly date should be within a couple of weeks to a month before SPD but some are found with an assembly date after the SPD.
"Reasonable" is the word here. Having an engine assembly date well after (2-6 months) the SPD should raise flags.
Casting date should be 'reasonably' before engine assembly date.
All13 characters of VIN should probably be there for an OCT build.
Should start RS2*(3 or 7)L9 (A-E-G)

Ok thanks my block has 67 on casting date and D440HP on the pad but no vin on the rail so who knows what this block came out of are what thanks for the info. mike

It most likely came out of a 68 GTX, Coronet R/T or Charger R/T.

Have you looked for a VIN number on the back of the block by the oil sensor sending unit?
What is the engine assembly date on the front pad of the engine?

68 engine with the HP is a good block. if no VIN then an early 68' model year engine. At least the date on the pad by D440 will get you closer.

Sorry for the delay had to go to the barn on the top pad is D440 9-18 HP 1 their was a number by the oil sending unit hard to reed looks like 8E108855 but not my vin .

Sept 18, 67' an excellent block. I would trade an XS29L9xxxxxxx 69' GTX block for that one! mine has all 13 digits on it.

Ok dont no what i will do with this block it is a bare block that i got with the car and some heads i used a newer motor in it now i cant seem to find out what happen to the motor it was born with

mine is at the machine shop, I'll get the vin off it for you, this engine came from Missouri.

That makes it out of a GTX or Coronet R/T built at the LA plant in late Sept/early October.

Wouldn't XS indicate it came out of a Charger R/T?

Mixed my engines up My GTX engine is an RS23L9xxxxxxx. They are both in the shop. I was typing charger, and thinking Plymouth, sorry! (mentalpause)
