Anyone know how to decode 1962 Plymouth fender tag? I understand shipping order#, body, trim and paint codes. It's the line with the alphabet that i can't get. The engine # under letter A , trans, etc. What # under what letter and so on represents what? Any help would be appreciated.

Fuely I understand some of the 1962 dodge option letters & no.s .tell us what no.s are under what letters? Maybe they are the same and I can help!Ossie

mike,

Thanks for the info, but have already tried most of them. They all seem to work for the later cars, but not the 62's

SOME information is available via the white books. A couple of clarifying questions to see if I can help. What model are we talking about? Also, each plant coded differently. At which plant was the car built? I'm assuming this is a B body model and it was built at Lynch Road. If it is a Lynch Road B body, post the codes in a format like this with the code numeral following the letter it is under:

SO NUMBER/0120
BDY/342
AB/75
J/5
12/28
567/135

And I'll see what I can do.

The VIN search will turn up some basic info on the car. Not to the extent the fender tag has on it but some.

Right here is the best place, or guy. Most of the de-coding sites are not as accurate as ol' Alfred E. Newman.

Under the;
A/5 = 383-4bbl
B/4 = 3 speed manual
D/2 = unknown
J/5 = heater with defroster
L/3 = unknown
M/8 = unknown
N/3 = unknown
P/1 = unknown
V/1 = unknown
Z/9 = factory new car service -less gas

Under the one/1, Two/6, Five/1, Six/3, Seven/4 gate (16) and base (134) sequence number related to producing the body in white Thanks

Was this a cop car?
What is the SO number?
Is the paint code 99?
The unknown codes might be determined by cross referencing the tag to the Broadcast sheet. If this was a cop car, they could relate to roof reinforcement, special suspension or cop car modifications like that.
Interesting tag. Anyway you can provide a picture of it?

Fuely62, sorry for the delay .you really need the build sheet as it is hard to decipher a plymouth tag(for me.) as the alphabet designation is different.
codes would be far better as they are the same.
Eg.
A is engine .N for dodge!
B code (344) is trans yours is a manual 3 spd A-745. C is dodge!

try get your build sheet from Chrysler historical

ossie

IIRC, engine codes for 62-64 Hamtramck-built Dodges are under the Q/R, 62-64 Lynch Rd-built Plymouths are under the AB. If nothing is under the engine letters the car came with the standard engine for that model.

I only know 1962's are under N for Dodge and A for Plymouth

You are correct in sayin" If nothing is under the engine letters the car came with the standard engine for that model."

62
A for LR Plymouths
N for Hamtramck dodges

63
A for LR Plymouths
Q for Hamtramck Dodges

64
AB for LR Plymouths
QR for Hamtramck Dodges

I'm still corn fused. my 62 fender tag has under the 7-8, P-P, A-2, H-3, L-1, 0-5, and X-1....what does this tell me?
