I've just about had it with the tappered axle rear end in my 64 Dodge Polara. I'm thinking of swapping it out for a newer style slip on drum sure grip rear end. Will all other B body rears fit this car?
Thanks!

The 66-67 are about 1/2" + or - a 1/4" than the 68-70 rears and even those vary a bit. The springs are pretty much the same on those years. Tolerance was quite a bit though out the line back in those days. Measure what you have and post it. The charts that are out there are a good source of info but they are not gospel.

The 65 B-Body housing is the narrowest of the 65-70 housings.Springs are really close to the same for all of them.The 65 is apx.52"outside to outside!You can put up to an 8" wheel with no problem,min. of a 4.5"backspace on the wheel.

All spring perches on b body's 62-70 are 44 inch on center. I put a housing from a 68 in mine and my wheels have a 4 inch back space. I ran into a problem with the outer wheel lip and had the housing narrowed 1 inch per side and now it's perfect. So maybe with a better backspace you wouldn't have do what I did.

I thought you can swapped the tappered axles for the later style axle and keep the same housing. There's quite a bit of adjustment on the adjuster axle to make up for longer axles.

I dont remember if it can be done or not.

As 5.7 stated all 62-70B's have perches on 44" centers

Housing widths, flange to flange B BODY
'62-'63= 53 1/4" (And '64 Max Wedge)
'64 = 55 5/8" (Exc. Max Wedge)
'65-'67= 54 1/4"
'68-'70= 54 15/16"
'71-'74= 57 7/8"
'71-'73 wagon= 59 7/16"
These are correct.

Thanks for all the info. I found a sure grip 742 case. Can I swap the open 741 diff for this 742 sure grip and reuse the housing and tappered axles?

Heel yeah, start wrenching!!
