64 Polara Gerst suspension unboxing

Just received my Gerst front suspension for my 64. Very nice pieces and everything needed looks to be included. I got the upgraded Wilwoods and paid $4455 shipped to the door. Figured I’d post some pictures of actual product received in case anyone was curious.

Looks like a quality product.... but at a hefty price.
Not exactly cheap, but it is the best value out of the few legit setups on the market. Also, you have to figure that almost $800 of that was brakes, which you'd need anyway, and another couple hundred was shipping. By the time I would've rebuilt my entire stock front end with some upgrades like uppers and torque rods, between the parts and powder coating I would've had close to $2000 in a stock front end - not including the brakes. So I was basically looking at $1500 difference to upgrade, adding easier and more tuning options, and shaving about 150 pounds of weight. If you've already got a good front end and are only having to upgrade a couple parts, this is definitely an expensive route, but in my case, I had a rusty front end from a car that's been sitting for a LONG time and I needed everything. That's how I justified it to myself at least :)

64 Polara 500. I've had the car probably 10 years and haven't touched it. Bought it basically as a pretty much rust free and straight shell with the intentions of putting it together right away, but then life happened. Now my girls are a little older and through a couple of flips I've been able to put some money aside so I can finally get the car together. Part of the driving force is seeing my father having some health issues and realizing that he will never have his 68 GTS put together that he started years ago. Just made the decision with my wife that the car is getting done. It will be primarily a street car, since the closest track to the house is an hour away - and it's awful - and the closest decent track is a little over two hours away.

Was originally red with black interior but I'm going all black with it. Somewhat of an old school look with the early hemi 3" scoop and torque thrusts up front with black steelies in the back. 11.6:1 440 with ported 915 heads with 2.14/1.88 valves and an aggressive Engle cam. Should be somewhere between 500-550HP. Caltracs with mono leaf springs. Fabricated Quick Performance 9" rear with a Strange 4.11 center, Moser axles and Wilwoods in the rear too. US Car Tools subframe connectors. Fiberglass hood and bumpers - cheap horsepower, as those items on a Polara are HEAVY. Also, my bumpers are ok but they could really use a re-chrome. Fiberglass was an affordable and practical alternative. Along those lines, I'm also removing the factory AC/heater box. I'll go back with an aftermarket setup at some point. Smaller, lighter and more efficient. I'm in Georgia, so if I want to drive the car, I pretty much have to have AC. The car is pretty much stripped down now and waiting for the dustless blaster to show up. Having pretty much every surface done. That should be done within the next few weeks, then I'll have the necessary welding done (subframe connectors and rear sump). I'll paint the underside, trunk, interior and engine compartment at my shop. Using Imron industrial paint for all that, with some Zolatone going over it in the trunk. Flows out nicely and is EXTREMELY durable. Then assemble it to roller status and then it will head to my brother's paint and body shop for body work and paint on the body. Hoping to have it drivable sometime early summer. The big goal for the year is to make the trip to the Mopar event up at Lebanon Valley in NY in September and race with my father with his Belvedere and my oldest brother with his Barracuda.

I went with The RMS under the front of my car. Price on mine was $3640.00 I believe but it was free to me (long story).

The ONLY complaint I have about any of it is the box with the K member was beat up when I got it. The rear faces of the square tubes were a little scuffed up from sticking out of holes in the box, but you'd be hard pressed to see it when it's on the car.

I think I've seen posts about yours in the past. Haven't you had it for a while? I think the price has come up considerably as I was a smidge under $5200 for the equivalent RMS product when I priced it. Definitely good product though, just couldn't justify the price difference when the Gerst setup would do what I needed it to do.

The RMS looks nice as well the only thing I didn't like about theirs was the fact that the lower control arm bolts aren't supported on the outside ends as was mentioned in another thread. As far as price difference, I dont think there is one it all depends on what options you get.
 
If I'm looking at the picture of the frame correctly, it looks like the lower arms are set up for a double shear mounting for their support. If so, thats something lacking in many other changeover units for the cars. Waay better rigidity.
 
I have seen them survive many wheel stands on drag cars. Now you guys have me maybe considering adding a gusset to the outer points back up to the framrails (just in case).
 
I know what your saying but in a wheel stand the force is coming down in the direction of the pivot and has the shock to absorb it but when you hit a pothole on the street some of that force is going to be transferred to the pivot bolts.
 
Looks like the Gerst will be another one to keep an eye on for possible use. I like the setup that Mike, 65 roadracer, is using and am watching for feedback on it while he puts it through its paces on the track and street. I'm leery of several of the Stang2 based units, especially at the lower control arms since the mounting is not very rigid. These are used in a lot of conversions for rods and other stuff. I've run into some problems with the through bolts being bent, even from basic driving/no dukes of hazard stuff, because there is a lack of support in that area. Over time, as we keep the cars and drive them, we will run into a lack of old components and will need to change out to newer styles so its nice to make informed choices for replacements as opposed to flashy ads. Years ago when I was at SEMA I stopped by the QA1 booth and spoke with the rep there about their components for our cars. Luckily he was a Mopar dude so he understood when I asked him: What happens when you put a floor jack under the new frame? As you all know, this is the usual spot for a floor jack. He said that as long as you catch both tubes, should not be an issue. Hmmm. Something to think about here. Maybe make a cradle for the jack so it bridges the tubes for better support and not bend them.

You are correct. The lower control arm bolts thread into the assembly and there is a set screw hole to insert a set screw against the bolt after assembly.

Somebody was thinking when they designed that unit. Unlike others who are copying someone else's homework and flubbing.

Please don't take this the wrong way but have you considered putting your Fathers car together before something happens to him?

No offense taken. We (brothers and I) had thought about it. But he won’t let us put it together any way we could afford. If it doesn’t get finished to concours show quality, he doesn’t want it finished. Kind of backed himself into a corner on how he wanted the car done. That’s one reason I waited so long - I didn’t want to do the car until it could be perfect. Seeing where he’s at I realized mine isn’t ever gonna get done that way so I bit the bullet and decided it will get done as nice as I can afford. Won’t be perfect, but it’s gonna get done.

I know the feeling I have multiple cars in different stages and don't want to touch them till my kids are grown and I can build a large shop and finish them the way I want... I love the 64 Dodges as I have had my 64 since 1987. Here is a pic. I lost digital ones when computer crashed...
