Getting ready to paint my 64 and I was wondering if anyone here had any pointers for me on actually removing the stainless trim on the body. I need to know what tools I need and how to get the upper corner fender emblems off so I can replace them. I know most of it just snaps on but I figured it would be best to jump on here and ask those who have done this already on this model about what they ran into before i jump in on it.

Hi Jim,

I'm working on a '64 Polara convertible. The skinny S.S. trim is mostly held on with plastic retainers pushed into holes that are in the fender, doors, and rear quarters. I removed this trim pretty easily by placing a small, thin, flat screwdriver under it and gently prying up. Once you get it started, it actually comes off pretty easily. In several places (like on your door edges near the door handles) you should find a stud instead of a push in plastic retainer that hold the trim. If I recall, the stud will have a self expanding clip attached to it and the clip fits inside of the trim edges. Just move the spring on the clip slightly with your small screw driver and it should release.

The wide Polara trim is held on the same way but with bigger 'D' shaped retainers. Again, a small, flat screwdriver is your friend here, and just take your time.

If by "upper corner fender emblems" you mean the 'Birds' that the Polara models have (the 330's and 440 Dodges used different trim on the fenders), these have studs molded into the part that line up with holes in your fender and then a capture nut holds them on. (I can dig up some picks of mine off of the car if you need them). If you're removing your fenders for your re-paint, it will be easiest to remove these after the fenders are off. If not, they can be removed with the fenders still on, just a tighter area for you to work in. The studs on these 'bird' emblems aren't much, so be gentle. Pulling the wheel off might be a good idea here so you can see what you're doing and also make sure that your socket or wrench is squarely on the retaining nut.

Last piece of advice is to take pictures before and during the process, and use masking tape to identify where each piece of trim goes on the car and the DIRECTION it goes on the car. Most of it is pretty self explanatory, but the door trim in particular could cause you some confusion when you go to put it back on.

Have either of you purchased new clips for the trim? I'm going to paint my Polara 500 in the next year and was wondering where to buy new trim clips.

rtspecialties.com has the plastic trim clips for the trim.....be prepared to grab your ankles!!!

I'm not to that stage of my restoration yet, but while searching on here I found that another FBBO member had suggested Mega Parts as a source for the trim clips in a posting back in 2010. I checked their website today (http://www.megapartsusa.com/proddetail.asp?prod=132-STCS347) and found that they do sell a kit that contains the big 'D' shaped clips for the wide molding and the smaller clips for the narrow molding for $165.00 plus shipping.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond.Sixpacksteve i appreciate it. I am not sure if the part I am reffering to is the birds. they look like they are supposed to be turn signal lights located right above the headlight and are black with a silver dodge logo in the middle.A pic would be helpful as I looked up a new pair and at 300 bucks a pop I think I will just repair the ones I have. I have found the clips for the chrome. I forgot where but the whole set was 35 bucks.I think it was at a local auto body parts place called space age.

There is a screw in the front behind the trim ring AND a stud/nut combo underneath. The front splash shield is kinda in the way ... you might need to remove that.

IIRC the emblem is just stuck on with foam tape and will be very brittle. Good luck with the repair.

Hi Jim,

Sorry...I thought your initial question was referring to the side of the fender, not the top. I understand what you're asking now and although I couldn't get your link to work here at the office those pieces you're referring to on our cars are called 'Fender Tip Emblem Medallions'. There's the cover piece which is painted body color, a clear lens, the black piece with the silver Dodge logo, and a black seal that's required for each fender. I've seen all of these pieces on Ebay at one time or another, and when advertised as being N.O.S. parts they sure are as pricey as you said they are. I've also seen reproductions of these items for sale at what I thought were reasonable prices, especially since they only apply to the 1964 bodystyle. I'm not sure about the reproduction quality though since I haven't looked at them that close yet.

I'm pretty sure that to remove the Medallions you need to have the fenders off. But let me look at my parts again when I get home this evening and I'll get back to you on that. The Medallion cover piece (painted body color) has 2 studs in it, and to get to the nuts to remove it you MIGHT be able to access them by removing your front tires and front fender splash shields.

Hey Jim, just following up this morning..... I looked at my fenders last night (I'm doing a total restoration on my convertible so they're off of my car). To get those Fender Medallions off the fender you'll need to do 1 of 2 things:

- If you're disassembling your car to paint it, when you pull the fenders off the car you'll then be able to (easily) remove the front splash shields. The nuts holding the Medallions on are behind those shields.

- If you're NOT disassembling your car to paint it, then you can remove the front tires and with the fenders still on the car, remove the front splash shields and then get to those Medallion nuts. It will be tight working inside of the fender, but it can be done.

Hope this helps! :)

Try: clipsandfasteners.com or
althafastener.com
I got a lot of trim retainers from these companies.

Ok I'm back at it with the 64. I injured my back and had to stop. I Have all the chrome off except the birds and the top medallions . I Looked to see if I could see the nuts mentioned and only found three on the birds. I Still can't get them off.

Hello again Jim. Sorry to hear about your back problems and I sure hope that you're feeling better now.

Let me check and see if I have an old fender with those medallions still on them. If so I'll take some pics of the backside.

And here's a pic of the back of the Polara Bird. You'll notice there are 5 mounting points and I believe that just that short, center one near the nose of the bird is only one that's really threaded. The brass looking 'nuts' that go onto the long chrome studs tighten up on them pretty quickly with just a few turns. If you're going to paint the car and remove the fenders to do that anyway, I'd leave the Bird and medallions on until after you pull the fender. MUCH easier to see the hardware and access it with the fenders off the car.

And here a some pics of 2 different fenders. In the one photo, I'm assuming you already found the phillips screw that's under the headlight surround trim? In the other 2 pics you can see the inside of fender, and with the front (metal) splash shield in place it's almost impossible to get to the stud and nut on the backside of the medallion.

On the red fender, the splash shield has been removed and you can see the hole where the medallion stud goes.

Thank you Steve. I Got them off! I Left the fenders on as well as the tire. I used a 1/4 inch ratchet to get into the tight spots and removed the splash guards. It was easy sailing from there. One question I do have now is what is the primary function of the guards I removed? They seem to just block off the back of the headlight buckets and maybe brace the front of the fender. Is there any reason that I have to put them back in?

Glad you were successful, Jim. Tight squeeze, wasn't it? :)

The 2 guards (one in the front end of each fender and one in the back part) are also there to help keep road dirt and debris from packing up around the headlight assembly in the front when these cars were daily drivers. And the guard at the rear of the fender, especially on the passenger side, helped keep dirt & debris from blocking up the cowl drain. Another benefit of the guards is stone protection. You could dent your fender from the inside out by picking up a rock in your tire tread at slow speed and then have that rock come out on the highway. I'll re-install my guards when I get to that phase of my car's restoration.

Well I started sanding yesterday and have found two very small bondo spots yuck!

Hi fellas! I aso have a 64 Polara and will be removing my trim for body work and paint. It was nice to know what kind of clips i have. Ebay has plenty of clips available and not bad prices.
