67 coronet 500 engine decoding

Just jumped in with both feet. I bought a 67 Coronet 500 with a 383 4 Barrel. How and where do I look to make sure the engine and car itself came from the factory and are original. Many thanks. Clark goodtoothdoc@yahoo.com

Unless you know the complete history of your car you'll never know 100% if its the original engine; they didn't stamp the vin numbers in the blocks until 1968. All you can do is check the casting dates on your engine block and it should predate the build date of the car. Fender tag should give you lots of info including build date, check under back seat for broadcast sheet.

the 5th digit of VIN will tell you what engine came with car originally, also fender tag (bottom row) will also tell you what engine came with car...post a pic of fender tag and what is 5th digit of VIN?
