67 engine no.s?

I am looking at a 67 GTX for sale. How can I tell if the 440 and the auto trans are original or not? If I understand correctly, Chrysler did not put the vin on the engine and trans till 68. Could someone buy a date coded engine/trans that was correct for this car's build date and say it was the original one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

About the only you have on one of those, is to check casting dates, it should precede build date by a month or two.

Do a check of the fender tag/ Engine Pad numbers. motor casting/heads/etc.... Using information to match the Production date . You should have a 1966 casting on motor & check heads 915’s

GTX auto trans were 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission.

Torqueflite 727’s the numbers located on the upper housing...check pics in this site.
