The sellers were unsure of the gearing. Is there anyway to finding this out other than cracking it open?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say its either a 3.23 open or possibly a 2.73

Jack the car up, mark the yoke or driveshaft. Spin the tire ONE revolution while counting how may times the yoke turns. That's your gear ratio.
