How do you read the date on a case housing ?

I see something above the casting number. I have a 742 case that has "T22" by the casting number

I was looking for the same information that you are asking for. I got it out of a '69 Satellite and had a 10-spline pinion which is only found in early 489 cases. I think the 286 means the 286th day of 1968 for this case but there doesn't seem to be a standard date code on 8-3/4 since some have 3 digits, some have 4 digits and some have letters in the date code and some don't. At some point the casting number font got smaller and the shape of the case in the pinion area changed.
