70 RR Fuel Gauge Reading Question

Have a recently purchased 70 RR. Fuel gauge was not working correctly. Replaced the sender in the tank (did a ohm check before installing it and it read within spec). Now when the tank is full it shows just hair over 3/4 full. When do I need to do to get it to show the correct full reading?

Make sure you have the correct ohm reading gauge.

If it is the correct ohm gauge then you may need to make sure the sending unit is not cockeyed in the tank.

hows the wiring?bad contacts and worn wires can cause that.

mine does the same thing, was going to try to bend the float down so it would turn the pot more, should get it closer but havent got the tank back in yet

Sorry to say, but it seems to go with the territory on cars that fill up from under the license plate these days. The cars I have/had that fill from the rear all seemed to do the same thing. Like mentioned, bending the arm on the float down can dial you in a bit closer, but keep in mind that modifying it in one direction also moves the accuracy of the measurement on the other side of the spectrum...A.K.A "E" Empty. So, you may be reading more fuel than you actually have when the needle's to the left. Either dump the tank and see where she reads or take a drive till she konks out from lack of fuel and see where the gauge reads. Obviously a jug of fuel would be a good friend to have on that adventure. Good luck.

I have my tank out and looked at it, aftermarket tank and sending unit, the fuel pickup is 2-3 inches up off the bottom of the tank, going to try and bend the whole thing so it is at the bottom, i assume this will make it read alot closer. Might want to check yours.

I don't know....I also own a 72 Cutlass 442 that fills from behind the plate and that gauge has always worked correctly.........when I work on the dash this winter I am going to replace the voltage limiter in the rally cluster and see if that corrects the reading...all the other gauges don't read correct either........
