Is there supposed to be a bearing or bushing at the bottom of my 70 Roadrunner Auto on the column steering column? My steering shaft comes out of the end at an angle and touches the end of the column tube. Im sure this is whats causing the short in the horn etc. See the picture below.

There is supposed to be a bushing/bearing in there but it does nothing but u can adjust the steering column around to clear that from hitting

No, 1970 steering column does not have a bearing or bushing their. 1968 and 1969 columns did. Just rebuilt mine last year it is free floating. If you need any pics or question about it just ask me. Had it all out of car and took pics of the whole tear down process.

Hey thanks DP, I didn't think the 70 had a bushing there but was not sure.

I also have a 1970 4 speed RR. after rebuilding and negotiating the tube and shaft I ended up with the inner shaft just clearing the outer casing. The only bushing I could find was just after the firewall on the engine side. Any adjustments I made Inside to the column had minimal impact.

Thanks Troublemaker, I didn't realize I could adjust it at the firewall. When I get ready to install I will be sure to adjust it and hope that cures my horn problem.

Sounds like your horn may be grounding out and causing it sound. Check the harness at the steering wheel. The harness is pretty accessible at both ends. Pulling the cover off the bottom of the column will expose to the plug. I would bet irs at the top though. Easy stuff. Especially if it sounds while turning the wheel
