Still looking for help on my A/C vacuum lines. My car has an electric motor for my headlight doors, but there is a vacuum can underneath the battery tray. There is a vacuum line running from the manifold tee along the firewall and along the drivers side front wheel well. It then has a black factory nipple connector connected to another vacuum line that then runs back to the firewall and down to the grommet that goes through to the A/C heater box.Was the vacuum can one of those items that is put on by the factory if the headlight doors were to be vacuum operated? Or is it supposed to be working for the A/C controls? I need anyone that may have the same untouched factory A/C setup to help in finding out if I should have these lines connected to the can. I have a 4speed with manual drum brakes. My system seems to work, however it will not switch from A/C to Max A/C. Thanks.

It basically stored vacuum for the entire system to use, AC and all...

It would help me a lot if someone with a stock configuration could post some pictures of the way their vacuum lines are running. I have a feeling that the vacuum can was installed along the factory line but was not connected because I have an electric motor for the headlight doors. The spliced lines running from the manifold tee to the A/C box looked untouched like the factory did it.

Check out the members section of this website. Lots of pics of members 71 superbees that you can look through and hopefully find what you're looking for.

Or if you're ever up in Alabama you could always check out the Wellborn museum. He has more than a few 71's in his collection. I always wanted to check that place out.

Th first response was correct. The vacuum can is simply a reservoir, used for the heat/ac controller.
It has absolutely nothing to do with concealed headlights.
Concealed headlights were electrically operated on Chargers beginning in 1970.

I read on some other sites that the can was for the air grabber. Some people said that the can was put on as the car went down the line in the early stage much like a wiring harness where all the connections were available whether various options were included or not. Could that be the case?

Here is the diagram from the FSM. It shows the vacuum reservoir that you are discussing for the A/C.

Hogwash.... I don't know how people come up with stupid crap like that.
If the car did not get a Ramcharger hood, it did not get the R/C canister or special R/C vacuum harness.

btw....Dodges have Ramcharger hoods, Plymouths have AirGrabbers
