Very easy to take the whole unit out...the whole thing can take less than 30min to do.
I'm doing this from a 10+ year memory so forgive me if I leave out a couple of details.
Unscrew the few screws holding the A-pillars in, and remove them.
You'll need to remove the 3 bolts from the underside of the dash that supports the column. You'll also be smart to loosen the three bolts that retain the base-plate where the column goes through firewall. Drop the steering column down as far as it'll go. You can also remove the steering wheel to allow it to drop lower, but not needed.
Also take this time to remove the speedo cable and the wiring from the dash to steering column. Unplug the main dash harness from the bulkhead on the firewall.
The following works much faster when you have two people.
There are a couple of screws/bolts along the base of the windshield (helps to have a flex-driver to get to them), then, remove the two kick panels, and loosen the two large bolts that anchor the dash frame to the lower A-pillar. Just back these off a couple of turns, DO NOT take them out.
You'll be able to tilt the entire dash frame down towards the front seat. If you have someone to help, have them support the dash as low as possible, while you reach behind the dash assembly and finish unhooking and unplugging anything that connects the dash to the car.
In a short time, you and your helper can lift the dash off the two A-pillar bolts and remove the dash from the car.
I've done this a lot at junkyards, it takes a short time and very basic tools to do.
