......so, I have the open 8 3/4 742 case in the 1967 Coronet. I believe the cone-type sure grip came in those....in any event.....looking to find one to go in there.

Any of the sure grip units are interchangable in any 8 3/4 case, clutch, cone, or other (spool, e- locker, detroit locker, gear type). Only the gears have to match the case number.
The 741 and 742 cases came with the clutch style, the 489 case used the cone style.
The cone style is supposedly not rebuildable, (it really is) so the clutch style is generally preferred. (And more money.)
If i had an open 8 3/4, i'd try the drop in locker for the open case. Thats what im gonna do with my open nine inch (either that or a spool). Ive got a detroit locker in my 8 3/4 and i love it. Lots of people that have tried them dont. Snap, crackle and pop doesnt bother me a bit.

Well, I figured since I was taking the rear end out to clean it up, and to get some news bushings on the leaf springs, I might as well get the sure-grip added.
A used one may not be much cheaper and you still have a used one.

I was going to go that route I think. Dr Diff seems the pretty obvious choice, but I always throw it out here for a few days to see if folks have stuff they need gone.

I really like that dr diff unit for the price. I heard that he was out-of -stock on those. That situation might have changed.
Could be. I bet he stays pretty busy. We send him a lot of business. LOL

I had an open rear. Found a used Sure Grip for $450 (before the prices started going up). Ran that set for about a year and it was kind of noisy. By time I bought a new ring and pinion, bearings and clutches to rebuild it, I could have bought a complete new unit from Dr. Diff and been way ahead of the game. Lesson learned.

I installed a PowerTrax unit into an open diff last year for a guy for pretty much just the labor charge. It clicks when making a normal turn but when you pour the chili to it, it's locked and he likes it. The cone unit was introduced for the 68 model year....and iirc, that's the same time the 89 case hit too. I kinda like the cone unit myself as I have way less chatter issues with them than the clutch units and usually kept them for myself and sold the stuff everyone wanted. That included the 41 cases too and think it's funny that no one wanted them but yet I never broke anything in them. Picked up a lot of 41 case stuff for little of nothing over the years.
