Hey guys, I was wondering if a 8 1/4 rear will handle a mild built 383, what mods will it require to handle such displacement?

I know some A-body guys are running 8-1/4 rears running 12's and they are holding up. But I dont know what they have done to the rear. Ron

Looking to get about 400 hp out of my 383, putting on an A body 68 cuda. Yeah, i figured they beefed it up.

I think at 400 hp ish with a 727 & not too much converter, with a street tire it would probably be fine. That being said, the cost to "beef" up an 8 1/4 may be the same or more than finding a 8 3/4 for an A body.

Direct Connection's test car back in the day was a Duster with low compression 400, 727, 8 1/4 with a 4.30 gear & 9" slicks. they used this setup for testing the Purple Cams. They got this car into the high 11s

Needing up the rear? Nothing really needs to get done at this HP level, though if you want peace of mind, a new sure drip and aftermarket high strength axles is all you'll need.
