I pulled the 8 14 rear outta the 73 Charger I purchased. I picked up a sure grip for it.

Heres my question: The bearings on the sure grip are larger than the bearings on the standard/non sure grip differential. Everything else seems to be the same. Can I simply swap the bearings from one differential to the other?

Also its a 2:70 ratio and I want to swap to a 3.20 ration. Any special considerations?

Anyone have a good used set of 3:20 ring and pinion for sale?

Thanks

Richie

man.. i think the 8 1/4's had two different carriers based upon the gear ratio they were given from the factory, hence this could be your problem. I would call the place you order your suregrip from and run it by them.

More info can be had on this on randys ring and pinion, about carrior breaks etc..... I cant remember off hand but i dont think that carrior has a carrior break. Hummmm

Well the sure grip was a Craigslist buy. Ill do more checking . Appreciate the assistance.

Thanks

do the bearing mounts on the ends of the carriers measure the same? I would just swap the bearings if they will fit

Yes they are the same. They are also both 27 spline so it looks like I may be able to simply swap bearings.

Depending on if the r&p in the car is a better gearset as well, swap the ring gears too, just my.opinion

Well both ring sets were 2:70. I couldnt have lucked out and had a better set.:icon_frown:

Those things are pricey too!

Find a Dakota in a junkyard, They almost all had 3.23 or 3.55 with an occasional 3.91. Pull-a-part here is cheap on gears

Carrier Breaks: 2.47 / 2.56

Ill look into locating a Dakota set. Thanks

Im not sure what the carrier breaks no. means??

Thanks

Richie

One carrier fits the 2.47 and down while another fits the 2.56 and up. On the 8 3/4, one carrier fits all gears but it only goes from a 2.76 on up.

What he said! Lol and are the carriors in the pickup's 27 spline? Cant remember

Also with 8 3/4's it depends on what housing you have that determins the correct parts, ie: 742, 489, 741 etc

Thanks. This is a 2:70 housing so I suspect I could step up to a 3:20 and be Ok.
