Hey fellas, I've found a good priced rear end housing out of a 69 charger and I am wondering if it will fit under my 66 Belvedere wagon or 66 Belvedere sedan. Can anyone tell me if they are the same width, and if it will bolt right in? Thanks

The 69 housing is just a tad bit wider than the 66 and I'm not sure if the spring perches line up.

Thats what I was wondering. Havnt been able to find much online. I could get axles shortened and move perches, but it kind of negates the fact it is a good deal at that point.

B bodies are 44 inch on center for the perches?

Another problem you're going to have is wheel well clearance 66-67 have small wheel wells! I'd find an 8.75 out of a 65-67 b-body. The 65 is the narrowest of all the housings also! It will bolt in with no problems.

Just pulled a tape on my rear housing.
66 Belvedere wagon and sedan are identical at 51 3/8" inside backing plates.
Does anyone know offhand inside backing plate distance on a 65 Belvedere rear?
Sounds like that would be ideal if it is in fact narrower. I am currently fighting tire rub on rears at 245/60/14, only in turns and the associated body roll.

According to the site Budnicks linked above, it looks like the 69 rear housing is about 3/4" wider. Shows all spring perches b body until 70 the same at 44". Thanks for the site.
It also shows 64 as the narrowest year for b bodies.

bigowhiteboy,

I am running 255/60/15 on the rear and have no issues. Mine are mounted on 15x7 with 4.125" backspacing. I have 3/4" clearance on the outside and better than an inch of clearance on the inside. Your tire rub is due to the width and backspacing on your wheels. I'm guessing you are running at least 8" wide wheels and probably 4.5" or less of backspacing?

Dako- Yes I am running a bit to much backspacing, about 4.5" which gives me about 1/2" clearance on passenger side and 1/4" clearance on drivers side. I think the rear wheels are an 8", they were an extra set I had for my 73 Ford Maverick I put on for the time being. I will eventually put some torq thrust wheels in a 16/18" stagger with less backspacing.

I have a drum to drum 67 housing with a 2.76 741 single track gear set. Too bad you are so far away.....I would make you a heck of a deal.

Is your axle adjustment set properly? I ran into rubbing issues a while back due to sloppy axle adjustment by the previous owner.

The charts are mainly a guide because the factory tolerances were all over the map on the rear ends AND bodies. Best thing to do is measure for what you need but yeah, the 66-67 rears run a tad shorter than the 68-70's.

On a "big wheel well" car you'd likely never notice 3/8" per side, but on a 66/67 you might get more rub on the outside depending on your wheel/tire combo.
