So i have this rear out of a 66 Charger. Its a 355 according to the tag and counting the revolutions. Its the #2 case. My question is i tried to turn both axels in opposite directions according to the advise Hemi from NY gave me (thanks again) but no go they won't turn like that. So i guess there's a spool in there or somebody welded something???? Is this rear worth anything like this? Any advice/thoughts is deeply appreciated and thanks-----(BTW) rear turns fine and feels good with no play

If both wheels turn in the same direction it's possible you have a sure grip rear end or as you mentioned it's welded or has some other form of limited-slip spool. I don't know what it's worth but that rear end is perfect for get up and go and highway driving with the 3.55s.

Raise one tire and leave the other on the ground and put it in neutral and block the front wheels. Grab the one that's off the ground and try your best to turn it. Use a jack stand under the axle for safe support. If it's a Sure Grip and it's good, you will have to grunt pretty good to make that wheel turn and if you can do that without crapping yourself, you most likely have a Sure Grip in good condition :D

Unless it's like my sure grip and doesn't really slip. Not sure if it's because it has been rebuilt or not but that bugger doesn't budge.

Thank you Thank you Thank you-------------------What i did was reach across and grab each axel flange with my hands. My arms are long and i could get a grip but just about. Couldn't turn it in opposite directions. Next i stuck two big screwdrivers between the wheel studs, still no go. But i can't see a spool in a 355 so maybe i'll pull the pumpkin and see whats the deal

A 742 case will have a clutch type limited slip. It sounds like it's doing it's job correctly. A 489 case would have the cone style and they weren't as good or long lasting. Don't you want a limited slip??? Seems like your looking for trouble when there probably isn't any.

Ron,im not looking for trouble, somebody told me this rear could have a spool all i wanted to know is how i could tell if it was limited slip. Yes i would like it to be a limited slip and i now have a better idea of what it is---Thanks

You could get a good idea of what's in there by just pulling one axle and looking in, a spool won't look factory.

Is yours a cone unit or a clutch plate type. I've seen the clutch type become really tight after a rebuild. If the plates are not stacked correctly, that can happen.

That's true IF.....no one has ever had it apart and installed whatever they had on hand. I've seen cone units in 41's and 42's and clutch units in 89 case before. Yeah, it's not factory that way but it happens.

Ron, If i wanted to use it would you pull both axels check the axel bearing and change the seals. Is that a good idea?
Not a bad idea to pull it down and check it out. I've done many and that way you know exactly what condition it's in.
