Hi,

I have a 73 charger 440 slightly built ;) Turns out the rear I have is an open 9 1/4 *bummer* I have been told the 9 1/4s ran all the way up to 2007 and the 1500 series trucks had them with sure grip. Any truth to this rumor cause there are millions of them around.

9 1/4

Truth is, I had a 2005 Daytona Ram with a 3.92 and a posi from the factory.

I have a set of 3.73 gears if your interested.

So its true then? Will the complete rear our of one of these fit in my charger?

The 9 1/4 out of a Dakota will have 6 lug bolt pattern, and the spring will sit on top of the rear. You can probably make it fit but it will not be a bolt in and I don't know how you will get around the 6 lug wheel pattern without some cutting and welding.

My 02 Durango has a limited slip carrier but they aren't the best type out there. The little hardened clips that hold the ears of the clutch packs break, which cause them to protrude from the carrier and rub on the inside of the housing making metal power. I understand the Auburn unit is much better and I will be replacing mine with one when I rebuild my rear end. I have 167K miles and it's just starting to make a little noise but not bad so I'll push it off as long as I can.

I've been told your rearend's been making noise for years!

Yeah, the late models had limited slip rear but they are called Trac Lok. The clutch pack is outside of the side gears and the case is a single unit. It looks like an open diff but if you look hard, you can see the clutches sitting outboard of the side gears. I don't care for them one bit....

Your description is right on the money. Didn't know they were called Trac Lok. So how do you like the Auburn? I'm just looking for a better than OEM replacement.

Similar question to the discussion:

I am aware that the axle bolt patterns differ from the 4.5x5.., but will the newer (82+) years carrier fit into the older housings? I havent been able to find the answer anywhere.

The specifics:

are the carrier and pinion bearings the same sizes/interchange?
will the carriers with the traction control sensor ring fit into the old housings?
are the newer ones also C-clip?

I dont want to spend all kinds of time at the bone yard pulling one to buy it only to find out it dont fit. Has anyone tried it already with thier 9.25?

...wish my car had the good ol 8.75 frig
