I have a 74RR with an 440 that was swapped in from an 318, and apparently the 971 pan is the only pan that fits the 73 and later. When I got the car it came with a homemade pan that leaked and the pick up was sucking air. Probably because they couldn’t find a 971 pan. I found a 971 pan at 440 source that fits, but the problem is a 971 pan is only 4 qts. The engine is out of the car and the going to be rebuilt to a 508 stroker so I need a 6 qt pan. Moroso used to make the 6 qt version but not anymore. Is there a 6 qt pan that fits a 74 b-body?

I don’t think a stroker would require more oil except if you are going to race or you are heavily modifying the block enlarging oil passages and stuff like that. But if the engine keeps the same size and you are just getting a larger stroke, IMHO stock oil pan should be quite enough.

Not an expert opinion though, but just thinking if all volumes keep around the same… well…

My mechanic says no way the 4 qt pan will work. He said it will be sucked dry in 300 feet.

If block remains untouched and oil pump too, I can’t see a reason why will suck more oil. Oil can’t go to nowhere.

A stroker will suck more air and fuel, but… oil? You are not touching anything of the oil system, just a bit more into the cylinder walls (due the longer stroke) throught the oil rings, but that oil is not actually pushed in to the cylinder, but splashed.

All surfaces to be oiled are the same or around same sizes… mains and rods… tappets if hydraulic… camshaft surface… rockers…

One example… same oil pan and pump is used for a 350BB engine and a 440.

I CAN understand a more capacity pan if running quarter mile since high revs on race will really suck faster… but on street?

Revs is the only reason to enlarge oil capacity if oil passages remains the same. But at the same revs/speed? I think oil being sucked remains the same to the same surfaces at the same pressure through the same passages

I can be wrong thought, but being just logical on this.

Have you asked on engine board section about this?

Mancini has this pan based on a 971 but is a 5qt pan not 4 , that and your 1515 filter gets your 6 total.
It's $200

But is engine related too.

I meant ask there about the REAL need for a 6 quarts pan for a street car still being stroked.

I think they were reselling same old 440source oil pan. I also went to check there and notice they are “out of stock”. I guess because 440source replaced that one for a new piece now thicker.

The motor is going full roller with a high volume oil pump. The high volume oil pump versus a stock high pressure pump will move more oil faster.

You are correct.

This is absurd, but hilarious.

Yes. Pour 6 in, put the cap back on and slam the hood.

The reason I was considering a hemi style 7 (6+1) quart pan is that I've read the additional oil keeps the engine cooler in extreme (Florida) hot temperatures. At least that's what I've read possibly including here. Thx

While it probably helps, I'd say it's minimal
The only thing that helps is a properly designed cooling system
Radiator, Fans, Shroud, Water pump, & being mindful of air flow

........but the problem is a 971 pan is only 4 qts.......
You could have it split and add a couple inches if you know a good welder.

I'm thinking this speed bump scraper (stamped 971 green arrow) animal you may be searching for.......

This ones on a block in storage not accessible right now. (The red arrow points to an "on the fly" Abody center link modification from my '69 Barracuda.)

I have something similar sitting on a shelf. Not sure how close to 971 dimensions it is.
