A-833 Gearshift Control Housing

Just wondering if I can remove the housing with the tranny in the car to replace seals and gasket? Mine is leaking a little and would like to avoid pulling the whole thing. I'm unsure if I can just take the bolts out and slide the cover off without any of my shifting mechanisms falling out?

Yes, you can pull the side cover with the trans in the car. After you drain the oil remove the shifter rods, all the bolts on the cover and kind of rotate the cover down and away from the trans. Sometimes you need to take a hard rubber hammer and whack the cover to free it from the case. Have the shifter in neutral before you disconnect the rods. When you re-install the cover just make sure the shift forks are in the neutral position. Have fun.

Yes, but getting the forks back into the shift mechanism may be a PITA. I have done it long ago so it is possible.

At this point it seems easier to pull the tranny, been fighting with it for a couple hours, could have had the whole thing out by now lol

Following your advise....

It is possible but if you pull the trans you have a better go at it on a bench... make sure the point where the seals ride on the shift shafts are not worn if so build them up with a welder and use 600 grit paper to polish them up I would also paint them and lube with grease so there not dry....

Just can't seem to get things lined up and slid into place. Even if I had an extra set of hands there wouldn't be room, seems like. I had an idea to unbolt the tranny from the bell housing, unbolt the mount and see if I can turn it downward a quarter turn, just to have a little more access...

So you got the side cover off but can't get it back on? If that's the case, try using some heavy wheel bearing grease on the shift fork stems so that they don't want to turn when installing the cover. I guess after you've done this a few times it gets easier.
BTW, sleeper, it's ADVICE, not advise. Geez, now I have to be a 4th grade teacher...

Got it all together...tried some grease on the shift fork...worked like a charm! Also helped not being mad at it, going in with a cool head seemed to help lol.
