I've never liked the unequal snorkels on the 74 up hp aircleaners so I built one over several lunch breaks lately. I've got a 74 360 with air so it was kind of a challenge. I used another 2 barrel air cleaner to get a equal length snorkel and pieced it in. Word of caution to others. These air cleaners are like welding paper, so a tig would be a better choice than a mig, but that was what the shop had. Probably the hardest part was to get the placement right with it being equal to the other side and symmetrical to the round air cleaner. Since it is a CA car I had to piece in the flat spot for the emission valve and slightly move the PCV tube. Enjoy the pics.

Can't decide on color. Hp would be orange, original lo po would be black. More believable black, but cooler in orange. I have 2 lids so 1 is getting wrinkle finish.

Id say black, but do it the way YOU like...

Boy, can't believe I started on this in 10/2011 and still not finished. The guys in the shop give me a lot of flack about how picky I am and how it's not a Hemi air cleaner but I just tell them "it's a labor of love baby, not work for profit". I do have the 2 lids final primed and sanded for paint and I'm on the last coat for the body. I think. I ground all the welds and had to skim coat most of them with some "all metal". The other day our painter was looking for something to do and wanted to know if I had a paint code yet so he could paint it. He wanted to do a base/clear on it because he said I put so much work into it. Shoulda seen his face when I said I wanted to do a single stage so that it wouldn't be so shiny. I'm going to paint it hp orange and do up one lid in wrinkle because I like wrinkle paint thats why. Enjoy the pics. Hopefully the next post will be with some not real shiny paint on it.

That is some really nice work . I agree that it is a labor of love and just doing it for you makes it look cool .

I am working on a slightly similar project making my 318 2 bbl air cleaner a sealed ramcharger type air cleaner. Just a pet project....

I removed the snorkle, added 2 90 degree metal drains on each side with rubber hoses to allow the water out, I cut down the outer part of the 318 lid so it just covers the air filter and used a part of a pontiac trans am shaker hood I salvaged from a burned car. Opened up the are under the stock flat Charger hood for the ' 72 Dodge Demon hood scoop and sealed it to the hood.

Should look OK when done and add a little power (maybe).

Godspeed,
JON

I have one that someone made and a original orange 74 police hp one.

Would like to see that when its done. I like restored cars but truthfully these cars were 10 years from being stock when I came on the scene. I thought all Mopars came with airshocks and N-50's from the factory till about 1994 when I saw my first stocker! So I like tasteful mods to these cars.
